Finding strength on the mat.

At Chive Charities, we believe in the power of community to make a difference, especially when it comes to our veterans.

Combat veterans often face unique struggles when transitioning from active duty back to civilian life. With experiences that most civilians can’t fully understand, many veterans find it difficult to reintegrate into society after leaving the military.

Some battle feelings of guilt and the emotional weight of trauma, while others may face the challenge of finding a sense of purpose after leaving behind a life of service.

However, one organization is offering a unique and life-changing solution to veterans in need: We Defy Foundation, a non-profit organization that uses Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) to help combat veterans with physical and mental health challenges.

One of the most powerful stories that highlight the impact of the We Defy Foundation is that of Chris Painter, a Navy Hospital Corpsman who served alongside Marines in some of the most intense combat situations.

Chris was often the first on the scene of many horrific incidents, some inflicted by the enemy, others self-inflicted. His experiences left him with a heavy burden, feeling as if he hadn’t done enough to help those in need.

After returning home, Painter found it difficult to decompress and reconnect with civilian life. The memories of those brutal moments haunted him, and it was only after discovering Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that he began to heal.

Through a connection with Brian Marvin, a former We Defy Foundation president, Painter received a scholarship to train in BJJ at a gym in Houston. This was the beginning of a transformative journey for Painter—one that led him not only to recovery but to a renewed sense of purpose.

Chris’s journey to healing took a powerful turn when he connected with We Defy. Thanks to the foundation, he was introduced to a sport that’s become a key part of his emotional and physical recovery.

Not only did it help him cope with PTS, but it also brought him closer to his future wife, Natalie. Today, Chris is an ambassador for We Defy, helping other veterans navigate their own journeys of healing.

Programs like We Defy are essential because they provide a supportive community and a healthy outlet for veterans. Through Jiu-Jitsu, veterans not only gain physical fitness but also the mental clarity needed to process trauma.

We Defy also creates a network of mentorship, encouraging veterans to give back and support each other. It’s a cycle of healing that strengthens the entire community.

For veterans looking to get involved, the We Defy Foundation offers multiple ways to contribute. Whether it’s fundraising at Jiu-Jitsu events, mentoring other veterans, or assisting with logistics and outreach, there’s a place for everyone to help make a difference.

Chive Charities strongly believes in the power of mentorship, which is why we’re proud to support We Defy’s mentorship program, giving veterans the tools they need to thrive both on and off the mat.

Thanks to our amazing Chive Charities donors, we were able to provide a $10,000 grant to further enhance the foundation’s programs. These funds will go directly toward supporting more veterans like Chris, ensuring they have the resources they need to begin their Jiu-Jitsu journey and build a strong support system around them.

The process for veterans to receive a scholarship through We Defy is straightforward yet impactful. Veterans must be combat veterans, 80% disabled, and new to Jiu-Jitsu.

Once selected, they receive a full scholarship, including a gi (the uniform), gym fees, and ongoing mentorship throughout the year. This comprehensive support helps veterans reintegrate into civilian life while also fostering resilience and strength on and off the mat.

We know that our veterans have given so much, and it’s our responsibility to give back. By supporting organizations like We Defy, we can offer veterans not just financial assistance, but a path to healing, community, and connection. It’s a reminder that we can always do a little more to support those who have served and their families. Whether it’s a donation, volunteering, or simply raising awareness, every action helps.

Chris Painter’s story is a perfect example of how Jiu-Jitsu can be a powerful tool in a veteran’s recovery. But it’s also a reminder of how much more we can do to help veterans transition from combat to civilian life. By supporting We Defy and similar organizations, we’re helping veterans tap into their inner strength and build the future they deserve.

We are incredibly proud of the work being done by the We Defy Foundation and the positive impact it’s having on the lives of so many veterans. Chris Painter’s journey is just one example of how Jiu-Jitsu and the community can transform lives, and we’re excited to support this amazing organization.
