HUTTO, Texas -- The dream began in John Lorek's mind, of transforming an empty field into an all abilities sports complex.
We want this to be a safe place and haven, said Lorek.
The father of two started a nonprofit, Central Texas Abilities Sports, four years ago so his daughter with an intellectual impairment and his son with cerebral palsy and a visual impairment could compete in sports together.
The games are so much fun. The whole family can participate if everyone wants to and there is no pressure, no second looks, said parent Chrissy Weber.
The group organizes sports leagues all over the area, but parents say they need a permanent home.
We've had parents with kids in wheelchairs hit a rock on a dirt field and flip over, and the parent falls and the kid falls out of the chair. So this field is greatly, greatly needed, said Lorek.
The sports complex will include a 13,000 square foot baseball field with Astroturf on top and rubber underneath, a splash pad, a playground and a basketball court.
